Spiritual Leader of Nondenominational Flint Church Asks: “What Keeps You Sane?”

November 2nd, 2010

GhandiGhandi said:  “But for my faith in God, I should have been a raving maniac.” As a spiritual leader in one of the nondenominational Flint churches, I hear people talk about our “crazy world” all the time. It would certainly seem that the world, indeed, has gone insane. Countries warring against countries, religions warring against religions, ethnic groups warring against other ethnic groups, and political ideologies warring against each other. If this truly were all there is to life, what would be the point in living at all? That is, to get up every day to “fight the good fight” would still be a fight, right? As Motown’s, Edwin Starr, would sing, “war, what is it good for…absolutely nothing!”

So, where shall we go to find peace? Where shall we go where war is “absolutely nothing”? It would seem that the only “safe haven” is within ourselves. I believe that Ghandi had faith in the Unmovable, Unconditional, and Changeless Presence of God that he found within himself, no matter what appeared to be going on around him.

What a sacred experience to find a Peace that is the same yesterday, today, and forever no matter what appears to be going on in the outer world; a Peace that welcomes you into Certain Serenity even if you’ve been “a raving maniac” only moments before. Our faith in this Prince of Peace awaiting us at the core of our being, and our turning within daily to experience It, gives our body, mind, and soul a respite from the crazed insanity of our currently fractured world.

I invite you to take time today, maybe even in this moment, to turn within yourself and find your own Place of Peace. And, then stay enveloped in that Sacred Space until Its vibration and resonance permeates every layer of your existence. Then, when you walk out into a world that seems to have come down with a bad case of the crazies, you will stay sane…and you will become, as Ghandi, a peaceful voice of reason that shows up in the world.

Dancing With The Spirit

September 10th, 2009

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving, are words attributed to King David in the Book of Psalms. It is also written in the Bible that King David wasn’t a spectator, sitting on his throne, when it came to parades, but instead danced in the streets much to the consternation, and often the condemnation, of pompous observers. But, David could neither hide his joy nor allow it to exist unexpressed no matter how harshly some people judged him.

Frequently, we forget to appreciate our life, as it is, when we’re focused on getting more stuff. Surely there must be much in our life for which we can feel joy even if we don’t live in a palace or have all the material things we’re convinced we must have.  I knew a young man once, named Miguel, who didn’t appear to have many material things. His home was a tiny room attached to the garage of one of my neighbors. He worked as a janitor at night and as a handyman around the neighborhood during the day. Rumor had it that he sent most of the small wages he earned to his family who lived somewhere in Mexico. Yet, I’d never seen him unhappy. He walked with joy in his step, he actually whistled while he worked, and and his large, brown eyes seemed to always have a sparkle. Curious as to how he could sustain such joy, I asked him his secret. He responded, matter-of-factly, “Any day above ground is a good day.”

Let’s face it, nothing is more precious than scarcity. Life in this world is finite. But, we’re here now! No matter how his life might have seemed to others, for Miguel, being alive was a cause for celebration. Our life is a miracle that we have neither created nor earned. We’ve all heard the saying, “Life is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.” However, have we accepted the gift without saying “thank you”? Are we waiting, instead, for more…and more “stuff” before we sing our song of thanksgiving?

If we had all the material possessions that money could buy, but we were unable to appreciate them, what good would our possessions be to us? And, likewise, if we had little or no possessions, but were able to rejoice in the gift of life itself, then what need would be have for more?

Prosperity and abundant good but come about for us in the future, but we hold the gift of “the present” in our hands right now. Today, let’s dance with the Spirit to a song of praise.

There Are Lessons to Be Learned – Are You Paying Attention?

May 7th, 2009

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates

Each moment of our lives contains valuable learning lessons. The extent do which we grow varies considerably based on how much energy we devote to examining our school of life.  If you are a person that already tries to learn from every experience that you have, you may also be craving ways to learn even more.  Reading short spiritual stories can truly help take your personal spiritual growth to a new level.

One of the wonderful things about reading spiritual short stories is that they allow you to examine things that you may never actually get to experience directly.  This can open up your soul, heart, and mind to learning much more than what your own personal experiences can bring.  You can begin to read about cultures you would never be directly exposed to.You can start to learn through the experiences of others who are different than yourself.  You can begin to read about people of different faiths than your own.

Reading a variety of spiritual stories can allow you to vicariously experience many things that you would never get to experience should you not seek them out.  By reading spiritual short stories you can expand the base of things you have been exposed to which in turn will expand your spiritual depth.  It is amazing what spiritual truths become evident when you begin to read spiritual short stories that deal with life experiences of others that are very different from your own.

If you are truly interested in spiritual growth, start making it a part of your daily routine to read at least one new spiritual short story. To get the maximum benefit, look for stories that are notably different from your own life.  Truly try to put yourself in the details you read within the story.  Changing your perspective in this way can help you to open yourself up to learning spiritual truths that have never before occurred to you.

While you will never be able to live one life where you experience everything, you can expose yourself to many more things by reading spiritual short stories.  By immersing yourself in stories that include elements far different from your own personal experiences, you may find that you learn things you never realized possible.

How to Unblock Your Spiritual Wealth

October 7th, 2008

We don’t hear the term, “Godspeed,” as often as we used to. There was a time when it was commonly said to someone who was taking off on a long, possibly dangerous journey. And, it was often used as a loving sentiment towards the deceased at a funeral.

I used to believe that Godspeed meant “faster than the speed of light” or “at the speed of Spirit.” So, when I heard the minister conclude a memorial service by wishing the newly departed “Godspeed,” I assumed that the pastor was asking God to rush that soul on to its next plane of existence as quickly as possible. But, recently, while looking up another word under “g” in the dictionary, I stumbled upon Godspeed. I discovered that the word originated in Middle English and was taken from the three-word phrase: “God speid you,” which meant, “God prosper you.”

So, a farewell salute of “Godspeed” was actually a wish for the journeyer, whether going across the oceans on a dangerous mission or through the ethers to destinations unknown, to have a prosperous journey. Most of us, of course, would prefer to begin our journey of prosperity on safe terrain, and right here on earth rather than waiting until we land somewhere beyond the “Pearly Gates.” We want an abundance of good in our life, here and now: lots of money, a great career, a terrific relationship, and plenty of physical comforts. We are ready right where we are to let God prosper us!

Is it wrong, especially in these troubled times, for us to desire to improve our individual worldly experience? There are those who believe that the philosophical tincture of “New Thought” is self-centered, that the inspiration for its practice is to obtain a comfortable material lifestyle, and that the ultimate goal of so-called “spiritual enlightenment” is earthly luxury. But, this is not the case…

New Thought is founded on the concept that All Creation is forever One with the Creator and that each and every being is imbued with the richness of Spirit. Life knows what every creature requires and, therefore, knows what we need before we ask. You could say that we come into life “fully loaded” with all the accessories that make us a “luxury model.”

So, how do we discover and experience our spiritual wealth?

Teachings on prosperity and “mental control of conditions” are often misunderstood. Learning to manifest abundant good in our life is not about our getting something for nothing. Certainly there are those who are looking for “secrets” to get-rich-quick, or to get-love-quick, or to get-healed-quick. But, they usually aren’t interested in learning a new way of being, or in obtaining spiritual enlightenment. They are more interested in manipulating the outer world of things than in discovering the richness of the life within them.

A doctor friend of mine, who believes that true wellness for her patients occurs as they take responsibility for the health of their bodies, often suggests to them changes in diet, exercise, and other activities; lifestyle changes that will not only help them with their current physical challenge but will have long-term benefits to their health and well-being. She told me the other day that after giving advice to a patient who was suffering from a painful problem brought on by years of unhealthy living, the patient asked, “Isn’t there just a pill I can take for this?”

Sometimes we approach our mental-emotional-spiritual health the same way. We want pain relief without making the kinds of changes that bring about permanent relief. “Can’t I just pray to win the lottery or that my bills will disappear?” Yes, you can. “Isn’t there some sort of ‘secret’ or ‘mental trick’ to getting the money I want?” Yes, there is. But, the results of such prayers and “mind focus” are often only temporary, and then we’re back in a state of need and want. Why? Because nothing in our life changes permanently until we do…

There is not enough money in all the lotteries combined to buy one bit of spiritual awareness. Prayer and visualization can sometimes improve our physical situation. But, when improvement occurs, it can be fleeting if it is not the result of a permanent change in our thinking, a transformation of our perception, and an alteration in the way we see ourselves and our relationship to the spiritual life within us.

Change comes with a price tag. Impoverished thinking such as intolerance, blame, selfishness, and greed leaves us “spiritually bankrupt” because these things are the antithesis of the richness of Spirit. Bloated self-interest blocks our ability to experience the abundance of our inner life and renders us insatiable in the world. An empty human vessel can’t be filled from the outside in.

We think that having worldly things will make us happy. Isn’t it “happiness,” then, that we’re really seeking? Why not go to the Source of Happiness? Happiness is fulfillment, and the experience of being “full” and “filled” can only come from within.

If we want to experience abundant good in our life, if we desire true prosperity in all the ways that it can express, not only in our finances, but in the richness of our relationships with others, we must pay the price…

The cost to us is the surrendering of our petty grievances, grudges, victimized thinking, excuses, and blame. This is the poverty we carry with us, and these dark, hardened beliefs block our experience of something greater. We don’t “create” prosperity when we let go of limiting thoughts and ideas. Rather, we remove the junk so that we can see the Good that is already present as the fullness of our original state of being, and allow it to flow into our life experience unimpeded by contradiction.

True wealth is a spiritual condition. When we discover the richness inherent in our inner life, the goodies of the world pale in comparison. Material things suddenly become the byproduct of our inner fulfillment rather than the motivating force behind our spiritual quest. Our improved material life becomes the residual effect of our spiritual enrichment, growth, self-discovery, and self-expression, and not the ultimate aim. “For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

We unblock our spiritual wealth as we let go of “things on the outside” and turn within. It is a journey without distance. Enter in peace. Godspeed!

The Inner Life: Peace from the Inside Out

September 23rd, 2008

Many paths lead to the Inner Life, and though there are many reasons why individuals choose to take the journey within, we might all agree that the impetus, in part, includes a search for a deeper meaning to life and a longing to experience an unmoving and peaceful place from which to view and interpret the ever-changing world.

There’s so much talk these days about peace. There are plenty of negotiations going on in the name of peace and a number of peace summits planned for the future. There’s even been a “Road Map” for peace that’s been tossed about by various factions around the world. But, in spite of all the plans, and even with the cartographic assistance of a map, our world still has not “found” peace.

So, the question each of us might ask our self is “Does peace exist in a place that can be found in the world?” Is Peace contingent upon the opinions of those who hold world power? Could true peace actually dwell in the hands of whomever is the most politically influential and/or financially powerful in any given moment? Or, could it be that I am looking for true Peace in all the wrong places?”

Kipling wrote in his wonderful poem If: “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you…” It is such a wonderful statement of the potential power that dwells within each of us to take possession and control of our responses to life.

He might have said, “If you can keep your peace when all about you are losing theirs…” whether they’re blaming it on you or their neighbor or a particular ethic group or another country, then perhaps you’ve discovered where the real “Road Map” for peace ultimately leads…

When we observe nature, it is so much easier to see that Peace, true Peace, unconditional Peace flows through life — in, above, beneath, and as creation. The joyous vibration of life at sunrise and the rest and deep contentment when sunset falls. In Its primal and original state, Peace flows through every creature, large and small, unimpeded by opposition, undisturbed by conflict, and unregulated by result.

Peace in Its pure state is Perfect Peace, a Center unmoved by analysis and consensus. It is a Peace that exceeds circumstance and condition; a Peace that is not contingent upon humanity’s personal conditions for Its existence.

Because Peace is ever-present, we do not need to seek It, as if It were somewhere else. It isn’t necessary for us to set up outer conditions for Its appearance. Often outer conditions depend upon personal, political or ethnic conditions, which are only transient mind sets in an ever-changing creation. All that is required of us, so to speak, is our recognition of the Presence of Peace. If we want to experience the harmonizing effect of Peace in all our affairs, if It is ever to manifest as the State of our personal experience or as the human condition at large, each of us must acknowledge Its Power and Presence, here and now, no matter what may be going on personally or in the world. This is not a suggestion to look at life through rose-colored glasses. This is encouragement to reach deep within ourselves and bring forth the Pure Energy of Life the dwells at the center of our being.

When people and events appear disharmonious, often, rather than our recognizing Peace as the only true Power and Presence in spite of appearances, we frequently attempt to change the behavior, opinions, and attitudes of others in order for “clear the way” for Peace to appear. Control, manipulation, coercion, and force become instruments of a peace that must be achieved rather than experienced. Recognition is the instrument of that Peace that already Is…that Peace that is already in you.

Throughout the ages, and in our world today, the human race has attempted to bring about peace through war and conflict — both sides seeking to overpower their enemy, convert their opposition, and control the situation in order to achieve “peace.” You might agree that the horrors humankind has carried out against itself in the name of God are only surpassed by the battles it continues to wage in the name of Peace.

Though we personally may not agree with war and may feel that there are more spiritual ways to resolve social conflicts, we may unconsciously, or even self-righteously, hold the same points of view that beget war and violence. Many of us, in one way or another in our daily life engage, mentally and/or verbally, in personal battles of our own.

When we bump up against the hardened assumptions of differing points of view, ideas that seem “foreign” to our own, we may not always recognize that Peace is the only Presence no matter the human opinion, but instead we may perceive differences as a sign of disunion. We might seek personal peace of mind through our attempts to convince others of the rightness of our position or the correctness of our way of doing things. Or, perhaps, we might even try to achieve peace by suppressing our own true nature and sense of what is right in order to appease another, losing any chance of true peace in the process.

It is important for each of us to notice our patterns of belief. We can ask our self: When something appears to go wrong, do I look for someone to blame before the situation can be resolved? Do I justify my temporary expressions of irritation, aggravation, and anger because of the behavior of another? Do I recognize Peace in every moment or do I look for a moment’s peace?

When we live our life in “reaction” to outer circumstances, it is easy to feel separate from others and from  our own true Center of Peace. We look out through eyes that are framed in what feels like an isolated self and look into a world where diversity frequently appears to deny unity.

How often have we listened to the news, read a newspaper, or talked with a friend about the disharmony, violence, hate, and destruction in the world today and then shook our head with a verbal “tsk-tsk” to emphasize how different the world is from us? But, is it really possible for anyone to be completely different from the world when each one of us is a part of the world?

The world that we see– the good-bad-beautiful-ugly-just-unjust — is us, personally and collectively. We affect the world through our thoughts, words, and actions.

There may be no boundaries to Peace, but our individual experience of Peace is dependent solely upon our own awareness of It. The more we agree with what we see “out there” — or attempt to separate our self from the world out of fear — the more susceptible we are to the subconscious persuasions of the human race…whether that human mindset has been hardened through generations of confirmation or is as fleeting and fickle as the next political election.

If we want to see Peace, we must choose to be Peace. We cannot allow our self to mindlessly accept the ideas of exterior, narrow, hostile, greedy, or self-important forces in the world, for such automaton acquiescence can pull us away from our own inviolate Center of Peace and may place us in harm’s way.

If the subjective state of our thought creates our objective experience of the world (and many believe this is does), and if the subjective state of our thought is the sum total of our thinking and knowing, then we cannot afford beliefs, notions, concepts, and actions that are un-peaceful, that are engendered by fear,  and fueled by separation and disharmony, and then walk out into the world of our creation and expect to be safe. Our thoughts and words of doubt and fear, our anger, blame, judgment, and sense of separation from others, personally and globally, energized by the intensity of the feelings behind them, are as powerful as our silent longings and spoken professions of peace.

The Peace that we can claim as our innate “center” is not a place we must get to, but rather a moment-to-moment state of being from which we can choose to live. Spiritual Peace, lasting Peace, the Peace that passes understanding, is not only  our Center, but Its also the Circumference of all life. Unconditional Peace requires nothing at all (not even a deep breath) for it to appear to us.

It may be easier for us to feel peaceful when we turn away from the chaotic objects of creation and turn, with our eyes closed, to the Pure, Formless Peace we believe exists “somewhere.” But it is vital for us to remind ourself that Peace IS — eyes open or closed, in our quiet centerings, in our silent meditations, when we speak our words in silent prayer, and when we speak our mind in the world.

When we recognize that Peace IS ALWAYS — unchangeable and unfailing — we will feel It and express It no matter what, no matter where, because Peace is all there Is, and Peace is what we are.
